After spending a few years playing in his brother Ed Baluyut's band, Versus, James Baluyut opted to go solo in 2001. The project was called Plus/Minus (+/-), and after a whirlwind year of writing and recording material, Baluyut released his first album, Self-Titled Long-Playing Debut Album, on Teenbeat Records in 2002. Baluyut was joined by Margaret McCartney and former Versus member Patrick Ramos on the album, but by and large it was Baluyut's baby -- he sang the songs, he played the instruments, and he even produced the album. He recruited...[more]

New York City act +/- {Plus/Minus} was originally conceived in 2001 as a vehicle for the songs of Versus guitarist James Baluyut, but the act quickly evolved into a full-fledged band, with the addition of fellow Versus guitarist/vocalist Patrick Ramos and drummer Chris Deaner. This new incarnation of +/- was an entirely original construct, layering wistful pop with dynamic and complex arrangements and fusing rich, dense guitar sounds with polyrhythms drummed, strummed and programmed. +/- (pronounced plus/minus) is the new band from Versus members and New Yorkers James Baluyut and Patrick Ramos. After working with Versus for six years, this duo have created a great new album of hard hitting melodic greatness. Last year's Versus EP, released by Insound as a tour single hinted at the superb song writing we hear with self-titled long-playing debut album. The album was recorded by James who has also produced records by Mark Robinson and Versus' hurrah, 2¢ plus tax and dead leaves. The tourin   [ read more ]

New York City's Plus/Minus arrives at its most fluid set of songs yet on the group's sophomore album, You Are Here. Guitarist James Baluyut finally has a band and Plus/Minus' sound, an atmospheric blend of guitars and electronic beats, is finally coming together. The dynamic between Baluyut, drummer Chris Deaner, and guitarist/vocalist Patrick Ramos is much more focused and direct than Baluyut and Ramos' stint with Versus. You Are Here is more or less a portrait of abstra   [ read more ]

On their fourth album, +/- cut back on the sound bites, synthesizers, and programmed drum beats, relying instead on their own versatile musicianship - warm horn sections, classical guitar, and pedal steel guitar. Xs on Your Eyes is distinctly more calm and confident in tone and is destined to become a favorite of many.
