13th Floor Elevators
Featuring the yelping vocals and visionary, occasionally demented lyrics of Roky Erickson, the 13th Floor Elevators were one of the original acid rock bands. Formed in Texas in the mid-'60s, the Elevators started as a garage rock outfit, scoring their one and only modest national hit with "You're Gonna Miss Me." While Erickson's loopy persona and Tommy Hall's odd "jug" percussion were the band's most distinguishing features, several members of the group's original lineup contributed strong material to their albums. Although these inconsistent efforts somet...[more]

On their groundbreaking debut album, the 13th Floor Elevators sometimes sounded as if they were still learning how to work with the strange beast of their own creation known as psychedelic rock. But their second set, 1967's Easter Everywhere, found them a great deal more comfortable and confident with their loose and hypnotically trippy approach. Easter Everywhere doesn't have an out-of-the-box classic cut like "You're Gonna Miss Me" or "Fire Engine" from {^The Psychedelic Sounds of the [ read more ]

Their classic debut album from 1966. "The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators" exemplifies the group's unique psychedelic-punk sound. Listening to it is a journey worth taking -- not only for confirmed fans of their music, but for '60s music buffs, too.

Originally released in 1968 by the International Artists label. An incomplete album tentatively titled The Beauty And The Beast that was released with a changed title after the band's demise. Its finest moments are 'Never Another' (one of the best and most demented tracks ever recorded and the only one on the album written by the usual songwriting duo of Roky Erickson and Tommy Hall) and 'May The Circle Remain Unbroken' (a haunting Roky's composition that may be the strangest thing this great band ev [ read more ]

Did the 13th Floor Elevators invent psychedelic rock? Aficionados will be debating that point for decades, but if Roky Erickson and his fellow travelers into inner space weren't there first, they were certainly close to the front of the line, and there are few albums from the early stages of the psych movement that sound as distinctively trippy -- and remain as pleasing -- as the group's groundbreaking debut, The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators. In 1966, psychedelia hadn't been [ read more ]

It's too bad the sound quality isn't better -- it's muffled and inconsistent -- as these "live" tracks from the 13th Floor Elevators are otherwise pretty good. As it turns out, however, they aren't live at all, but a collection of studio outtakes with overdubbed applause (accounting for the fact that it's invariably louder than the music). This "fraud," as bass player Danny Galindo has described it, was perpetuated by International Artists with little to no input from the band. Still, the {\Merseyb [ read more ]

Although the title is rather misleading (this is everything the band ever did), Legendary Group at Their Best is an excellent way to view the Thirteenth Floor Elevators' checkered career. All four releases are included, even the infamous live album. Starting with their first album, The Psychedelic Sounds Of..., the band was a creative monster at the time, making some of the wildest and most original psychedelic rock of the decade. To put this into proper context, this double-disc Roky Erickson compilation is a double- disc, 32-cut collection that documents Erickson's tenure with the 13th Floor Elevators. Those who are indeed collector's of the influential psychedelic band's material have everything already, the only convenience is that this is in a single package and leaves off some of the real dross, although there is some here. There is a great version of Bo Diddley's "Before You Accuse Me," taken from a 45, and a [ read more ]

A mess of grainy sounding unreleased demos, live tracks, and B-side castoffs make up this budget set. While its lo-fi quality actually enhances some of the tracks, this is a long way from being the set you start your 13th Floor Elevators collection with. Its utter lack of liner notes or recording information hurts, but to its credit, it includes what appears to be the original take of "You're Gonna Miss Me." ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide

Guitarist Stacy Sutherland wrote most of the songs on the band's final studio album, as Roky was largely absent due to drugs and problems with the law. Decent psychedelic rock -- pretty straight-ahead and disciplined for the genre, actually -- that doesn't match the inspired heights of their previous material. The closing "May the Circle Be Unbroken," with its wads and wads of reverb, may be the strangest thing the band ever cut. [The album was reissued in 2004 by Snapper, complete with bonus [ read more ]
