16 Horsepower
16 Horsepower is a Denver-based alternative country band revolving around the unique songwriting and singing of David Eugene Edwards. The band made its name with music that combines rural, backwoods kitsch with edgey, off-kilter country-rock. First teaming with drummer Jean-Yves Tola and bassist Pascal Humbert, Edwards lost the latter when the band relocated to Denver from California and added Keven Soll to the lineup instead. Their eponymous debut album was released in 1995 on A&M Records and was followed a year later by Sackcloth 'N' Ashes, which featured a...[more]

Despite their official dissolution a few years ago, 16 Horsepower casts a long shadow that colors the gothic Americana genre today. Ex-members' bands (Woven Hand, Lilium, etc.) are engaging and critically lauded, but the demand for posthumous 16 Horsepower releases never seems to cease. Live March 2001 is a live recording of one of 16 Horsepower's classic, best recorded shows, released in North America on Alternative Tentacles and on Glitterhouse in Europe. Several of rock's most respected lyricists have found inspiration in the Old Testament -- a fertile ground for ideas, characters, and events that resonate with the listener. But only David Eugene Edwards of 16 Horsepower can really claim the kind of upbringing that might lead to a true understanding of these texts. Raised by his grandfather, a traveling Nazarene preacher, Edwards was immersed in this extraordinary world of hellfire and damnation from childhood. Still a believer, he has channeled this unique [ read more ]

David Eugene Edwards and his melancholia-drenched posse favor the dark grandeur that comes with mournful swathes of countrified guitar, heavy-hearted violins, pianos and accordions, of lonesome banjo picking, and Ennio Morricone tautness. Add a dash of Dylanesque roots-philosophy and the result is a forlorn dustbowl saloon bar where Nick Cave woefully sinks bourbons with the Gun Club -- only moments after a loved one's funeral parade.

Driven by off-kilter fiddles, a bizarre sense of humor and punk-inflected country-rock, 16 Horsepower's second album Sackcloth 'n' Ashes is a weirdly captivating listen. Nearly every song is a strange, backwoods fable, delivered with clever irony that never undercuts the essential, disturbing intentions of the songs. It's not for everybody, but for alt-country fans tired of Gram Parsons homages, Sackcloth 'n' Ashes is a welcome listen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
