Andrew Hill has made a career of confounding expectations and intermingling styles, inventing his own in the process. Down Beat.

Andrew Hill hadn’t recorded for almost a decade prior to releasing Dusk (Palmetto), Down Beat’s “Jazz Album of the Year” in 2000. Since that release, the 60’s jazz icon has written over 40 more original works, some of which were inspired by his fellowship at a medieval castle in Italy. He features eight original compositions on his new Palmetto album, A Beautiful Day, a live recording of his big band (including members of Dusk’s Point of Departure Sextet) at work at Birdland in January of this year.
