ALBUM LEAF
The Album Leaf is the one-man solo project of Tristeza guitarist Jimmy LaValle. By taking elements of classical, jazz, and post-rock, LaValle constructs his pieces utilizing ambient noise, field recordings, and radio transmissions. A collaboration between Linkwork and Music Fellowship sparked the Album Leaf's first full-length, An Orchestrated Rise to Fall, in 1999. An EP (In an Off White Room) preceded the release of LaValle's second album, One Day I'll Be on Time, on Tiger Style in March 2001. The Album Leaf opened for Sigur Rós' first tour of the U.S. later that fall. By the time he began recording his third album, he'd secured the services of Sigur Rós' Iceland studios, along with several of its bandmembers. The results, In a Safe Place, appeared on Sub Pop in June 2004.
On! Air! Library!
by MacKenzie Wilson
Twin sisters Claudia and Alley Deheza join Philip Wann for the beautiful headache that is On! Air! Library! The post-rock/experimental trio formed in 1998 while the three were balancing random day jobs in New York City. Borrowing their name from an African documentary that starred an old man who read books on a radio show called 'The On Air Library,' On! Air! Library! honed their moody pop stylings by playing various parties in and around the boroughs of New York. A deal with Arena Rock was cemented in October 2002. Shared dates with labelmates Calla followed into the new year and the split EP with the Album Leaf was released by spring. The Lifetime or More EP introduced On! Air! Library!'s gauzy textures to a broader audience, in turn giving them the needed confidence to record a full-length album. An abstract blend of guitars, programming, keyboards, and vocals came together as 2003 ran its course. While some of the tracks included on On! Air! Library!'s spring 2004 debut were recorded in Wann's bedroom, the majority of On! Air! Library! was tweaked in the studio with producer Steve Rivette (Beastie Boys, Liars). Brad Conroy of the Boggs and Interpol's Sam Fogarino contributed drums, adding to the hypnotic fuse that is On! Air! Library!. After touring with Interpol and The Secret Machines, On! Air! Library! called it quits in late summer 2005. Alley Dehaza went on to work with Secret Machines drummer Benjamin Curtis while her twin sister Claudia continued working with Wann for an unnamed project.
