A Place to Bury Strangers

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Drawing inspiration from shoegaze, classic indie rock, and atmospheric and dark sounds of all stripes, the Brooklyn-based A Place to Bury Strangers consist of Oliver Ackermann, Jay Space, and Jono Mofo. Forming out of the ashes of the likeminded Skywave, the band has a darker, slightly heavier, and more experimental approach than its previous incarnation. The trio made a splash in 2006, recording and playing gigs with Read Yellow, Bravo Silva, the Funeral Crashers, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called "the loudest band in New York". This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called "loud" rock and roll that's out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they've accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that's clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make. VINYL FORMAT. Double A-side featuring a remix from The Clapp. A dark metallic ring of the gritty tin of guitars, "I Know I'll See You" is a saw-soaked raw track, fusing Factory Records-esque mystery with addictive pulses of eardrum piercing austerity. Static-laden sonic qualities create sounds that evolve to sound like a slinky Werewolf attack of saturated distortion; hardly surprising given front man Oliver Ackermann's sideline building hand-wired guitar pedals.

From the opening blast of overdriven guitars and hyperkinetic drums it's apparent A Place to Bury Strangers, self-described "loudest band in New York," want to pummel you into submission with their unique take on white noise-derived guitar splendor, but then a hypnotic single-string riff takes over to briefly deliver a respite from the assault, recalling the classic era of shoegaze. The swirling atmosphere of guitar feedback and reverb-drenched vocals immediately bring to mind the most obvious comparison   [ read more ]
