2000, Flat Earth
Three years in the making, The Academy’s self titled debut is a call to arms for a generation fatigued by the cliches of "alt-rock," and excluded by pre-fabricated pre-pubescent top 40 radio. Effortlessly synthesizing the influences of organic rock and roll and the digital, danceable music of the 80’s, The Academy has managed to create a world of sound where pop is rock, rock is pop and neither distinction seems too important.
Influenced by crystal-clear FM pop and intrigued by the ethics of punk, The Academy refuses to compromise on either front. Recorded primarily in a basement in the hills of southern Indiana, the band eagerly employed a patchwork of digital and analog synthesizers, drum kits and drum machines, guitars and hard drives. What emerged is a hybrid most appropriately labeled DIY pop.
