Aceyalone
A founding member of Freestyle Fellowship, Aceyalone played an important role in the evolution of left-field hip-hop on the West Coast during an era when hardcore gangsta rap reigned. Following the dissolution of Freestyle Fellowship, Aceyalone embarked on a solo career that never resulted in enormous success but did allow him to maintain his revered status within the West Coast underground hip-hop scene. He debuted solo on All Balls Don't Bounce (1995) and followed-up with A Book of Human Language (1998). After a three-year absence from the hip-hop ...[more]

In stark contrast to the quantity-over-quality approach favored by so many emcees, Aceyalone has always prided himself on quality control. Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones is no exception. With Lonely Ones, Aceyalone along with producer Bionik, strikes down sonic boundaries and throwing the listener back to a time when music was pure, energetic, and fun. Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones isn't just a collection of songs, but an album where every part is essential to its meaning. "I'm not from [ read more ]

As more and more great rappers find the underground is the perfect place to camp -- for the respect and freedom, if not the royalties and pay-offs -- records like Aceyalone's Love & Hate will, fortunately, become a more common occurrence. Released on Project Blowed, an open-mic night that gradually morphed into a winning record label, the album is a simple, straight-ahead match of excellent MC with great producers. Four of the best tracks come from PMD, front-loaded and featuring big-pimpin' bea [ read more ]

The breakout MC from the woefully underappreciated Freestyle Fellowship, Aceyalone emerged as the godfather of the L.A. underground scene with his 1995 solo debut, All Balls Don't Bounce. A spectacular lyrical milestone, All Balls was overlooked at the time, and later slipped quietly out of print. Which is extremely unfortunate, since Aceyalone is one of the greatest lyricists the West Coast has ever produced, twisting his fluid rhymes around and off the beat with the improvisational [ read more ]

Just a few months after Magnificent City came out, rapper Aceyalone came back with a limited-edition mixtape (allegedly only 7,500 copies were pressed) of exclusive tracks, remixes, and other goodies. As to be expected (and desired), three of the songs on Grand Imperial were made with the producer he shared the honors with on Magnificent City, RJD2, who is really quite talented in his ability to make a diverse set of beats while still sounding like himself, and all three tracks included here [ read more ]

Following their reggae flavored collaboration Lightning Strikes, The Lonely Ones finds cutting-edge rapper Aceyalone and producer Bionik absorbing Motown, soul, and doo wop, creating a dressed-up, jump-jive style of hip-hop that's so vibrant, it's like that Afrika Bambaataa and James Brown cut "Unity" but written by Smokey Robinson with production from Fatboy Slim. So distinct it'll wreck any mixtape it lands on, the brilliant "What It Was" puts a whole new spin on the "back in [ read more ]
