2002, Emperor Norton
The debut full length from Olivia Tremor Control co-founder Bill Doss. The OTC was formed sometime after Doss and a few of his hometown associates from Ruston, Louisiana had re-settled in Athens, GA (aka R.E.M. Headquarters) in the mid-90's. Espousing the combined influences of The Beatles, Beach Boys and the D.I.Y.-ness of the Punk era, the Olivias unashamedly resurrected the intricacies of the concept LP, painted over with surreal atmospheres and a supreme affinity for melodies. From the clarion-like vocal call that opens and closes the album, to a simple pop gem like "Sail Beyond the Sunset," or the pretty melancholia of "Better Way To Be," the sounds compiled here have a straight-up confectionary appeal to them.
