Aloha
Ohio's experimental rock quartet Aloha consists of guitarist/vocalist Tony Cavallario, bassist Matthew Gengler, multi-instrumentalist/percussionist Eric Koltnow, and drummer Cale Parks. On the group's two Polyvinyl Records releases, 1998's limited-edition 7" and the following year's The Great Communicators, the Interpreters, the Nonbelievers EP, Aloha incorporates jazz and post-rock elements with personal, emotional songwriting, which is mirrored in their intense, often improvised live performances. That's Your Fire marked the band's first full...[more]

Aloha emphatically trumps their pair of mostly exquisite Polyvinyl EPs with an even more exciting debut full-length album that further blurs the distinction between prog rock, jazz, pop, and post-rock while extending the legacies of all of them. That's Your Fire is a wildly adventurous recording, full of vibrant experimentation and improvisatory chance taking that is consistently pulled off. Although the band delves into innumerable musical genres, there is no mistaking their identity, thanks in la [ read more ]

Aloha loves a bit of everything (60's orchestral pop, prog rock, 20th century composers, iconic songwriters), but they don't dabble here and there. They meld it all to make their own, unmistakable noise on this, their fourth album. "Aloha makes warm, progressive rock with a dreamy, resonant aftertaste. The early Genesis-inspired four-piece has skillfully crafted an ambitious and intriguing fusion of pop, punk, and jazz rock" - CNN. On their second full-length, Cleveland's Aloha rechart their course with looping guitars and vibraphones over dynamic rhythm tracks. From the mind-clearing percussion romp that begins the album, to the persuasive anthemic swing of its closer, we find a band that is willing to turn any musical corner for the sake of its songs. This is a sophomore record that WILL NOT DISAPPOINT. Aloha surpasses every expectation and, in every song, proves why reviews like this were commonplace for their first album: "Take po [ read more ]

Aloha adds the orchestral pop of the late '60s and the post-prog rock of the '80s to its big thinking, rhythm-rich repertoire. Longtime fans will find a dreamy, layered soundscape to get lost in, and casual passersby will find hooks to keep them standing by the speaker. Aloha display their dazzlingly accessible post-rock grafting of jazz, prog-rock, spacy electronics, and pop on this superb five-song, 20-minute EP. The record has something of a live feel, giving the listener a quick snatch of what the actual Aloha experience is all about: by turns laconic, loose, taut, and electric; one moment diving into electronic expanses, the next offering up a sweet, lazy pop song, and then imploding into a phased, agitated jazz jam. In fact, the album was captured in two days ( [ read more ]

Aloha's most gorgeous, ambitious, and fully realized songs on a 30-minute long mini-album. Richly detailed, moody, intensely rhythmic, and flowing with melody. Aloha multi-instrumentalist and studio wizard TJ Lipple mixes in the studio magic while leaving the free-spirited vibe of the recording sessions intact. Piano, brass, oddly tuned guitars, drums, bass, mallet instruments, and vintage keyboards fill out the arrangements.

Aloha holds the distinction of being the only Polyvinyl band ever to be signed based on a demo tape. In just three years, this band from Ohio created a lexicon both innovative and unparalleled. The most complex of Chicago instrumentalists melded with heartfelt songwriting is the result of their work, and a live set of improvisational and physical intensity. In fact, the band routinely plays nonstop for the duration of their shows, without a setlist, relying on cues and chemistry to transition from song to s [ read more ]
