American Exhaust starts out of the chute in the first incarnation of their decidedly split personality as a band that can lay down the heavy groove. However, this band manages to flow back and forth from hard rockin' riff-rock reminiscent of the better Swedish Groove Rockers, such as Pawnshop, Mother Superior, etc. and California-style old school punk rock ala Black Flag. It's really a remarkable feat that they are able to bring these two styles together, not in a melded consolidation of the sounds, but to actually shift back and forth between them and have it not sound like a schizoid nightmare of a confused band without focus.
