It's been two years since the last album of new material from Austin's American Analog Set.
Hot on the heels of their recent singles compilation (Trance Syndicate) and 7" (Tiger Style),
the band returns with 12 beautiful tracks that will soothe you into a blissful state of musical
euphoria. The AmAnSet continue where The Golden Band left off - the band has opted for
shorter, poppier tracks as opposed to the band's early days of cosmic jams and loops.
Unlike Golden Band, Know By Heart contains spurts of musical experimentation in tracks
like the Neu!-esque "Like Foxes Through Fences" and even some classic rock influences
a la Fleetwood Mac in tracks like "Kindness of Strangers".

| thank god for the amanset. i was beginning to think that there was no one left to put all of this cosmic truth out there for us anymore. what a relief it is to listen to "known by heart", the bands fourth album. how finely crafted this album is indeed. gone are the grandious ten minute sweeps and noodlings long associated with this band. that isn't to say the gestures were not appreciated (by this writer more than anyone - and you can take that to the bank!), but rarely is it that you will see a band willing to mature and make a successful go at it. amanset does so with muted gusto, not so much limiting themselves, but rather expanding their reach with four minute song structures and getting their point across just the same. from the opening track "punk as fuck" and the brilliant "the kindness of strangers" to the closer "we're computerized and we don't need you anymore", "known by heart" is yet another fantastic bookmark in the tasty cataloge from these austin natives. listening to this album will confirm your belief that someone out there actually does get "it". | |
