Making their debut at a local Pittsburgh radio station in 1993, Anti-Flag got together for the sake of responding to their disgust at religion, nationalism, and fascism. Justin Sane (vocals/guitar), Andy Flag (bass/vocals), and Pat Thetic (drums) bopped around their hometown much to the dismay of skinheads while recruiting a following who proudly wore torn-up upside-down flags as patches. In 1997, after releasing a handful of singles, opening for their idols the U.K. Subs, the Exploited, and the Circle Jerks, and briefly touring the East Coast -- which led to...[more]

?On their fourth album, Anti-Flag position themselves as punk's foremost peace activists. And with the 2004 Presidential election looming at the time of its release, the Pittsburgh quartet's delivery of The Terror State couldn't have been better timed. Aiming fourteen aural bombs straight at George W. Bush, the group's incendiary musical charge is heightened by the contagious sloganeering of mouthpiece Justin Sane. Turncoat launches the disc, with the frontman painting Dubya as a war-happy liar. Escorted b   [ read more ]

The seventh full-length Anti-Flag release (and first on Side One Dummy) starts off fast and furious with ?Sodom, Gomorrah, Washington D.C. (Sheep in Shepherd's Clothing)? as Chris #2 takes aim at those who use the Bible to control the masses, spitting out the lyrics with an urgency that makes his voice crack. If the album's second track, ?The Economy is Suffering?Let It Die,? isn't nearly as reckless, it's just as impassioned, recalling the more melodic moments on those first two albums by The Clash, as Ju   [ read more ]

?As WTO has proven, the revolution will indeed be televised, and judging by Underground Network, Anti-Flag's anthemic songs will be wafting across the frontlines. From their earliest days, the group have worn their politics proudly on their sleeve, a shared belief which has seen them through lineup changes and expansion from trio to a quartet. Fresh on the heels of the 'War Sucks, Let's Party' tour, Anti-Flag assembled this brand new EP to benefit a very important cause. This past winter, bassist Chris #2's family experienced the horror of losing a family member when his sister fell victim to violent crime, leaving behind a young daughter and son. We all have our own gut reactions when faced with tragedy. Anti-Flag's was to put together this limited edition benefit E.P. in hopes it would help others who have gone through similar situations. Political punk rock has always felt pressure from society because of the extreme reaction many have to extreme political ideas. A good example of this situation was what Anti-Flag went through in the wake of the September 11th tragedy. Their name was viewed as "un-American" by many, and they found themselves on the receiving end of a minor album ban. On top of that, their anti-violence stance was very unpopular in the revenge-happy environment immediately following the attacks. Although it wasn't near   [ read more ]

Admittedly, it's strange that an old school-sounding punk trio would criticize punk scene denizens thusly: "Covered in leather, or plaid patches, or metal studs/Your hair is dyed or spiked with glue/You only talk to those who look and act the way you do/You scoff at how the cops treat you/But they're no worse than dicks like you!" ("Punk by the Book"). It's even more strange in light of Anti-Flag's Discharge/Rancid haircuts, a dog collar, and even a shirt that says "destroy." But since the   [ read more ]

As obnoxious and confrontational as ever, Anti-Flag leave no doubts about which side of the fence they're on with A New Kind of Army, the follow-up to their cult hit, Die for the Government. Their style isn't markedly different, but it will definitely please the genre faithful. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Though adamantly anti-major-label at one point in their career, Anti-Flag finally decided to emerge from the underground and make the leap from the indie world to the realms of RCA in April 2005. Thus, after being together for over ten years and boasting almost as many releases, For Blood and Empire marks Anti-Flag's entry into the big leagues.
