April March
April March is actually one Elinore Blake (b. April 20, 1965), and, contrary to all appearances, she is not a French pixie but a Californian one. The first album she bought was England's Newest Hitmakers by the Rolling Stones, but you wouldn't know that from listening to the music of April March, which hearkens back to the pre-rock days of European pop and French ye-ye music, and has little to do with aggressive textures or rhythms. April March builds bridges between French and American musical traditions, displaying an uncanny awareness of pop's past and present as well as a capacity to transport the listener to strange places. The album is a true collaboration with Spokane, WA's the Makers, who ignore the grunge explosion entirely, preferring to focus on the snotty garage rocking style of earlier Pacific Northwest heavies like the Kingsmen, the Wailers, and the Sonics. This collaboration between April March and the Southern California band Los Cincos is a pleasant listen, often sounding like a mix between the Cardigans and the Ventures. March's nice vocals glide over the most mature music Los Cincos have ever recorded.
