Arctic Monkeys

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Citing influences such as the Jam, the Clash, and the Smiths, the Arctic Monkeys create a vibrant punk-inspired sound well suited for Britpop and alternative rock fans alike. Alex Turner (vocals/guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Andy Nicholson (bass), and Matt Helders (drums) formed the Arctic Monkeys in Sheffield, England, in 2003. A year prior, Turner and Cook received guitars for Christmas. From there, these teenagers made practicing an obsession, memorizing hits by the White Stripes and the Vines. Musically, there are bits of The Stone Roses, "What's The Story Morning Glory", and "Nevermind". As catchy as those reference points are, it's the songwriting that has won the band a fiercely dedicated following; a mix of the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of The Streets and "Ghost Town" era Specials. Two #1 UK singles. Press already lined up with Rolling Stone, Spin, Entertainment Weekly, and Interview, to name a few. Three more US/C   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Much has been made of what an "internet sensation" the Arctic Monkeys have become, but it's obvious after five weeks in the UK Top 10 with their Domino debut single that it's much more than that. They have the songs and the live shows to back it up. Alex Turner's lyrics paint detailed pictures that take the street documentary eye of a hip-hop emcee and cross it with the distinctly British observational styles of Davies and Weller.

While this sophomore release is unmistakably Arctic Monkeys, everything's a little more muscular and aggressive. Each song is embedded with revelatory moments, as if some sort of critical mass is achieved through skillful song craft and sharp arrangements until an explosive release of energy or emotion is inevitable. Arctic Monkeys have exceeded expectations with this record.

Leave Before The Lights Come On was a highlight of their recent US tour, offering fans a taster for its eventual release. The song shows the band taking some stylistic chances, with a surf melody motif that kicks off before they settle into an unmistakably Arctics groove and lyrical sentiment. The two b-sides are covers: 'The Little Flames' 'Put Your Dukes Up', and the 60's Barbara Lewis chestnut 'Baby, I'm Yours', performed with The 747s.

This pre-album single serves to prepare you for the coming onslaught that is the rocking brilliance of their new release, "Favourite Worst Nightmare". Like some cruel bait-and-switch, this record opens with a lovely string quartet before a rude intrusion of frantic drums and squealing guitars send them packing (apparently inspired by The Jesus Lizard no less). The second track, "Brianstorm" barrels out of the gate with an itchy energy. "Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend" is a taut, suspenseful    [ read more ]
