Old Time Relijun
In January 1995 guitarist/vocalist Arrington de Dionyso was encouraged by the musicians that became Old Time Relijun to assemble a group to perform the compositions that he was writing. The group subsequently signed a recording contract with K Records and released two full-length CDs with the label. Between 1989 and 1995, de Dionyso recorded nine cassettes of homemade music on his four-track recorder, releasing each one on his own label, Pine Cone Alley. De Dionyso played the lion's share of the instruments on all of the cassettes, which he then gave to friends ...[more]

Whoever heard of an accessible Old Time Relijun record? Well, here it is. The latest incarnation of a band that keeps reinventing itself, while remaining true to their axis of emotional divinity. The beauty lies deeply ingrained in a jubilant outpouring of thunderclouds and crowns of thorns and tumbling bags of bones. The addition of drummer Rives Elliot to the kettle -- already containing Arrington de Dionyso (guitar, voice, and woodwinds) and Aaron Hartman (double bass) -- provides Old Time Relijun with a [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. The ferocity of lead singer Arrington De Dionyso draws listeners deeper into a world where language, rhythm, and unrepentant libido collide. This music is temperamental, unwieldy, and unyielding; aimed to cut listeners to the bone. Like the confrontational, compulsively danceable live show for which OTR are known and loved, Catharsis is a record and a testament to the oscillations of opposites: darkness and light, water and fire, spirit and matter.

Feral sounds have been corralled and turned beasts of burden to the will of our trinity, the musical experimenters, Old Time Relijun. On 2012, recorded with Calvin Johnson at Dub Narcotic studio, bandmates Arrington de Dionyso, Aaron Hartman and Jamie Peterson continue the exploration of the subconscious iconography begun with Lost Light. The cacophony of 2012 extends down dimly lit paths and discovers jocular illumination in the darkest places of our psyche, and ultimately, a hand held [ read more ]

Primal shack scree and clang drive the gods crazy! Ringleader Arrington de Dionyso inflamed by the backwoods big beat of Phil (Microphones, D+) and Aaron (IQU). Sex and doom-obsessed hyper-gospel, dissonance with fangs, Ayler-esque bass and a truly possesed clarinet chunder forth. Your funeral...

To commemorate their 2000 tour, Old Time Relijun gives up three songs from their '99 release reworked and interpreted into Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese! To round out this special EP, they present us with five brand-new songs of scorch and burn, of hillbilly rage emerging from the swamp. Frantic upright bass pulses, skeletal guitar scrapings, and twisted-throat singing emulate twisted images of Nick Cave and Doo Rag.

Witchcraft Rebellion is easily the most consistent release to date from this raucous, ramshackle trio led by Arrington DeDionyso and featuring the Microphones' Phil Elvrum on drums (who, by the way, is an excellent drummer; he's not on board merely to add name recognition). DeDionyso's singing falls somewhere between Captain Beefheart, Blind Willie Johnson, and Popeye. He screams, hollers, growls, whoops, and hollers throughout these 13 surrealistically bluesy songs. {&"Mystery Langu [ read more ]

If minimalist punk group Flipper had incorporated the excesses of Pere Ubu, then created a hybrid of the Cramps' Lux Interior and the Make Up' s Ian Svenonius to sing vocals, this Old Time Relijun album would be the result. Vocalist/guitarist Arrington De Dionyso explores the guitar's fretboard in every non-standard method possible, whether it's detuning and retuning during the middle of a song ("Telephone Call"), sounding like an uncontrollable factory machine ("Giant Boat"), [ read more ]
