Citrus (CD)
Asobi Seksu presents its new album, Citrus, eleven slices of guitar-swirling, sweet-and-sour, bilingual dream pop. Frontwoman Yuki's voice is more assured than ever, swinging from a girlish falsetto to plaintive laments and switching effortlessly between Japanese and English lyrics, all the while anchored by the lush, turbulent guitar of James Hanna. This is the sound of a band coming into its own, and having fun doing it.![]()

| The rejuvenated rhythm section stakes its claim early on in this album infusing the songs with a driving pulse that the ever effervescent singer Yuki can just float over with her new range. Far and away it is just one of the best dream pop albums to come out in a long while, vastly eclipsing their debut album, filled to the brim with tight, satisfying songs, and most of all, leaving you wanting more. | |

| Asobi Seksu is a colloquial Japanese term referring to "playful sex". It is also the name of a New York dream pop quartet. The moniker is fitting because Asobi Seksu's music is both sexy and playful with layers of dense guitar and sultry female vocals. The album starts with a bit of a teaser instrumental tune lasting only 17 seconds. It then delves right into the track Strawberries, and you never want to stop listening til the last track. The vocals are amazing, that of singer Yuki, who sings in both Japanese and English throughout the album. Her voice is very versatile in that it can make the smooth transformation from a pitchy sound to more that you would hear in a pop song. Guitarist James Hanna also does a great job on this album of playing the guitar in such a way that it is a powerful impact but not overpowering in his implementation of a variety of guitar tempo's in each song. The drums also have a strong presence in each song. Even though the sound of the guitar and drums is at times very strong the vocals are a stronger presence, which is definitely not a bad thing with the amazing sound of Yuki's voice. James Hanna even gets to showcase his vocal skills on the track "Pink Cloud Tracing Paper". This album is definitely a must for every Indie rock/shoegaze fan. This group is definitely evolving and has improved greatly since their last album, especially in the songwriting area. | |
