2004, Polyvinyl
The EP was recorded at Pachyderm Studio with producer Mark Haines just a few days before the band’s move to New York. The three songs showcase Rainer Maria at their most intimate, opening with grinding, angular guitar and Pachyderm's patented open drum sound. The music slams into soft focus on "Atlantic" and makes as if to recede, then blooms in a bittersweet ending. Wipe the slate clean; clear the tabula rasa. Listen to it three times and it could be an album. For a minute, anything seems possible.
Recorded at Pachyderm Studio (home of Nirvana's "In Utero" and P. J. Harvey's "Rid of Me") with "Look Now Look Again" producer Mark Haines just a few days before the band's move to New York, these three songs are Rainer Maria at their most intimate and high-fidelity.
The release opens with grinding, jangular guitar and Pachyderm's patented open drum sound. The music slams into soft focus on 'Atlantic' and makes if as to recede until it blooms in a bitter sweet ending. 'There Will Be No Night's' dimly layered vocal enters, inviting the listener to sit closer to the speaker, and 'Soul Singer' is a sort of 'tabula rasa' Mid-Western style, wiping the slate clean.
Listen to it three times and it could be an album, for a minute anything seems possible.
