Atmosphere
Atmosphere is a hip-hop group from Minneapolis that centers around rapper Slug (aka Sean Daley). The son of a black father and a white mother who divorced when he was a teenager, Slug became entranced with hip-hop, graffiti, and breakdancing, and formed the Rhyme Sayers Collective with two high school friends -- Siddiq Ali (Stress) and Derek Turner (Spawn). After some early gigs as Urban Atmosphere, where Slug DJed behind Spawn's rhyming, the pair hooked up with producer Ant (Anthony Davis), as well as like-minded locals such as {$MC Musa...[more]

In the year that followed God Loves Ugly Atmosphere's travels nearly took them to a major label; unlikely as it might have seemed at one time, the hip-hop trio's cerebral yet down-to-earth sound had become one of the hottest things in the underground, thanks in large part to rapper Slug'scharisma and surprising vulnerability. But the group pulled back, deciding to retain control and assign the album they'd completed to punk label Epitaph. Slug observes, ?Minnesota is dope/if only simply for not what we have [ read more ]

Coming straight outta the rough'n'tumble surroundings of Minneapolis/St. Paul, the Rhymesayers clique is slowly but surely putting Minnesota on the hip-hop map. OK, so the frozen lands that gave listeners Prince and Morris Day & the Time may seem like a fairly unlikely setting for the next hip-hop hotbed, but you can't deny the talent the area's been bringing to the table. First, Eyedea won the country's biggest MC battle with a brilliant display of freestyle ability, now Atmosphere's l [ read more ]

Atmosphere are a two-man group made up of MCs Slug and Spawn. There are a few pieces of filler on Overcast!, but it does have its share of good songs too, such as "1597," "Sound Is Vibration," "Scapegoat" and "Cuando Limpia El Humo." "Sound Is Vibration" has a heavenly feel due to the harp used in the beat, and Slug and Spawn bring a lot of energy to the song. "Scapegoat" is a creative song done by Slug, in which he talks about all the excuses people use for their mist [ read more ]

The opening track on Lucy Ford, "Between the Lines," burrows into the heads of a frustrated policeman, an oblivious young girl who watches movies perpetually to get away from her own life, and an indie rapper who descends into self-abnegation instead of self-aggrandizement -- hardly typical subject matter for a rap song. In fact, with Slug's singsong delivery, it hardly seems like a rap song at all, and is tugged back toward the genre only by Ant's steady beat-making. But then {$Atmosphere [ read more ]
