Say the name Barry White and you'd be hard pressed to follow it with the name of any other recording artist with such a huge, cross-sectional following. He was at home appearing on {#Soul Train}, guesting with a full band on {#The Today Show}, and appearing in cartoon form in various episodes of {#The Simpsons}. During the '70s, Dinah Shore devoted a full hour of her daily syndicated {#Dinah!} show to White. While there was a period where Barry White wasn't releasing records or making the pop charts, he did stay active touring and appearing on other artists' records i...[more]

Barry White has been to the top of the charts an admirable number of times, but only one of his hits was a ballad (a studio effort for the Quincy Jones album Back on the Block that included El DeBarge, James Ingram and Al B. Sure!). However, as a solo artist, White has never had a ballad usurp the number one spot on the Billboard charts. The Icon Is Love's featured release fills that void. "Practice What You Preach," which unites the maestro with producers Gerald LeVert and    [ read more ]

The phrase "very best" in the title of The Very Best of Barry White: Under the Influence of Love is a little disingenuous. This ten-track compilation is not a collection of his biggest hits; it's an overview of his earliest recordings with the Love Unlimited Orchestra. While there aren't any big hits here, and many of the songs are underdeveloped, White's seductive, string-drenched style can be heard in embryonic form on this disc, which makes it of interest to hardcore collectors. ~ Stephen Thomas   [ read more ]

Gold follows a handful of major Barry White compilations released since the '70s, including Casablanca's two-volume Greatest Hits (released in 1975 and 1981, then on CD), the three-disc 1992 box set Just for You, 1995's All-Time Greatest Hits, and 2002's two-disc The Ultimate Collection. Many of the sets in Hip-O/Universal's Gold series amount to reissues of two-disc anthologies released during the early 2000s through labels distributed by Universal, and this one is not an exce   [ read more ]

This midline-priced compilation attempts to survey Barry White's recording career from 1973-1999, giving equal weight to different periods of that time as if they were equally successful. That's what can happen when the artist is involved in the selection of a compilation; White is credited as compilation producer along with Universal's Harry Weinger in what may be his final contemporary album credit (he died while the disc was in production). As a result, "Staying Power," which peaked at num   [ read more ]

With '70s nostalgia being quite the rage in the early '90s, Mercury set out to cash in on the trend with this three-CD box set by one of the top soul/disco men of that decade. Though three CDs is a bit much for novices (who would be better off with the 1995 single-CD anthology All Time Greatest Hits), more seasoned White devotees will find that there's a lot to admire about this comprehensive package. Essential '70s hits like "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More, Baby," {&"Can't Get Enou   [ read more ]

The third in White's mostly stellar run of albums on the 20th Century label, Can't Get Enough finds the bedroom alchemist coming up with another solid batch of lush, proto-disco gems. White went from strength to strength during the '70s, collaborating with co-arranger Gene Page on some of the most sophisticated and seamless charts in popular music (Philly soul architects Leon Huff, Kenny Gamble, and Thom Bell also deserve recognition in this regard). And thanks to an amazing su   [ read more ]
