Beat Happening
Beat Happening was among the truly seminal and influential American bands of the post-punk era, a paragon of pop minimalism, rebellious innocence, and indie defiance. The linchpin of the Olympia, WA-based International Pop Underground, they adopted a stance in direct opposition to the accepted norms at the heart of rock music; ignoring all notions of pretense, professionalism, and stardom, Beat Happening created an unorthodox, raw sound which democratically rotated vocal, guitar, and drum duties between members while jettisoning bass altogether. The fifth Beat Happening studio album, "You Turn Me On," was produced by Steve Fisk and Stuart Moxham. Mr. Moxham had been a member of the Young Marble Giants, an important early influence on the band. "You Turn Me On" finds the band experimenting with various arrangements and musical ideas; several of the songs have two, rather than the usual one, guitarists playing interwoven parts, and many of the songs break out of the band's standard three-minute song format, some extending into the six to nine minute [ read more ]

Beat Happening's self-titled 1985 debut had such a drastic affect and influence on the independent music scene it's difficult to imaging its far-reaching scope. Built on the punk ideals of D.I.Y. and political awareness, Beat Happening virtually invented the indie aesthetic seen everywhere today, bringing with it a philosophy and alternate-economy (with the founding of K records). Still as polarizing now as when it was released, you'll either love or hate this album, viewing Beat Happening as a bunch of t [ read more ]

"Dreamy" is the fourth Beat Happening studio album, considered by many to be their finest achievement. From the epic "Revolution Come and Gone" to the country-tinged "Cry for a Shadow," there is a plethora of styles and forms and feelings on "Dreamy." Combining state-of-the-art studio technique with down-home captured in the moment, "Dreamy" is a delicate balance between "real" 24-track studio recordings, and documents made while our quiet three are ensconced in Steve Fisk's home four-track lodging (a photo [ read more ]
