Bedhead
Slowcore pioneers Bedhead were led by guitarist siblings Matt and Bubba Kadane, whose musical collaboration dated back to their years spent growing up in Wichita Falls, TX. The brothers continued writing and recording together even after Matt left home in 1985 to attend school in Dallas, and by 1990 they were playing in a band which also included drummer Trini Martinez and, on occasion, guitarist Tench Coxe. This line-up evolved into Bedhead in 1991 with the addition of bassist Kris Wheat, and early the following year the quintet played its debut live show...[more]

It didn't seem like it at the time, but with the appearance of this, Bedhead's debut, and Low's own first album some months later, the zeitgeist of post-grunge indie rock started to shift toward something more reflective and restrained. Not that WhatFunLifeWas doesn't steer clear of loud moments, to be sure; many of the songs use swelling transitions from quieter to noisier performance and back, all while avoiding the abrupt soft-loud-soft clichT of the time. However, even at the band's most explos [ read more ]

It's not the style of music Bedhead makes that's unique, it's the band's approach to that music. The five members are masters of making an emotional connection through an approach that is careful and deliberate. At the heart of the band is an indie rock sound that can be traced back to the most pleasant material of the Velvet Underground. A trio of guitars lays down unexceptional, strummed accompaniments; vocalists employ a reserved sing-speak; the drummer maintains a lazy pulse. However, with Bedhead these [ read more ]

Recorded in Chicago, Illinois in 1997. Following the quiet gentility of the first lo-fi "Four Song" EP and the layered experimentation of "What Fun Life Was" and "Bedheaded," "Transaction de Novo" is a mellower Bedhead record. Indie rock producer Steve Albini gives the band space to create its own sound; it combines percussion and odd time signatures with its well-known tiered guitar compositions. The vocals, stronger than ever, are no longer buried amidst the whirlwind of three guitars, but reside in spaci [ read more ]

-The Washington Post called this EP 'mesmerizing...edgy and blissfully lulling,' while Alternative Press said, 'Words fail to describe the sheer beauty this quintet wreaks with its three guitar, 'more-is-less' sonic interplay.' Ned Raggett of All Muisc Guide went further, 'Sometimes an EP is all it takes, and while Bedhead aficionados will likely mention other songs or releases as better starting points, for brevity and impact The Dark Ages perfectly captures the gently stripped-down feeling of power and hu [ read more ]

Brothers Matt and Bubba Kadane grew up playing music together in Wichita Falls, TX. In their various bands together starting in 1987, the brothers often used stringed instruments (viola, violin) - a telling sign for what was to come. Additionally, members Trini Martinez and Tench Coxe- both later to appear in the Bedhead line-up on drums and guitar, respectively- were in the Kadane's early work.
