1997, Gold Standard Laboratories
The Starlite Desperation disbanded last year after two exceptional LPs. By that point the band had relocated to Detroit, MI from Salinas, CA. Starlite vocalist Dante White quickly formed the Belle Isle with guitarist/songwriter Jennifer Pearl (he also moonlighted in the Detroit Cobras). The new band, in a makeshift lineup that included members of The Go, Dirtbombs, and Jack Oblivian Band, recorded these four tracks in mid-2000. Dante and Jennifer then reunited with Starlite bassist Yasmine Smith and headed back to the left coast. They' renamed themselves LOST KIDS, and the rest is history. Venturing further into dark garage and '60s psych influences than Starlite Desperation ever did, Lost Kids present a dense, cynical adaptation of the 13th Floor Elevators, Love, and Pussy Galore. Features the hands-down best song of this year, "Alive in the Snow." Fans of Starlite will not be disappointed.
