2011, Tompkins Square
Thumbstyle guitar-playing (where the thumb plucks bass parts that alternate with the remaining fingers that pluck melodies and harmonies) is a style that achieves a web-like interplay of sounds, as well as conjures a time and place far back in Americana history. Though the sound may have been from another time, guitarist Ben Hall heeded the call at an early age. The Okolona, Miss. native achieved considerable renown throughout the South before he hit his teens. As a young adult in the late '00s he built a reputation in indie and professional circles, recording with Charlie Louvin, KORT (Kurt Wagner and Cortney Tidwell) and Candi Staton. His self-titled album for New York-based Tompkins Square Records is, "album full of guitar tunes heavily influenced by… Merle Travis and Chet Atkins." The album was produced by Eric Ambel, who has worked with artists like Go to Blazes, Ryan Adams and Freedy Johnston. – Prefix Mag
