More Palace adventures starring everyone's favorite member of the Royal family, Will Oldham. Hear the darkness! An extraordinary release. Bonnie "Prince" Billy's album I See a Darkness seems to pick up where Will Oldham's 1997 album Joya left off; a more melodic style than the veteran Palace listener might be used to. #71 Seller of 2005! Bonnie challenged Matt to write music to a series of song lyrics, and this collaboration was done over some months, and included live shows in London, New Orleans, Brooklyn, and Baltimore. The two retired to Paul Oldham's Rove Studios to lay the songs down. They enlisted the help of drummer Peter Townsend, and vocalist Sue Schofield dropped in for a brief cameo. Superwolf is a pure, true collaboration between Matt Sweeney (music) and Bonnie "Prince" Billy (words). Matt and Bonnie have be [ read more ]

There are guitars, and strings. Amid the swell of sound and anticipation, there is a voice singing along, playing a part. More swells. The Bonnie 'Prince' intones. The Letting Go is an overwhelming undertaking. As mentioned, there are strings - lovely charts that do so much more than just trace chord changes up and down the neck. Arrangements by Ryder McNair and Nico Mulhy are threaded through the record, augmenting a simple quintet of players to provide a sixth sense. The deceptive nature of hi [ read more ]

Bonnie Prince Billy returns with "Bonnie 'Prince' Billy Sings Greatest Palace Music." Not exactly a greatest hits record, but not exactly a covers record, either, as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (aka Will Oldham) covers the greatest hits of Palace Music (aka Will Oldham). Basically, it's Will Oldham, in the guise of Bonnie Prince Billy, reinterpreting his older works. The result is 15 stripped-down, exquisitely brutal and poetic songs. As Boomkat said, "Make no mistake -- this is Bonnie Prince Billy's most commerc [ read more ]
