2006, Kill Rock Stars
This is the debut from an eight-piece Vancouver band whose startling, energetic live shows have won them listeners and dancers throughout Canada where they've shared the stage with The Unicorns and Xiu Xiu. Thanks to their horn section, they have a distinctive noisy oompa sound. They've been compared to The Danielson Family, Captain Beefheart, and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. Lyrical themes of desperation, betrayal, and hardship are brought to interesting light in this overly joyful, jittery music. "They Shoot Horses Don't They? sound like post-punks raised under a big top, albeit one under the direction of Igor Stravinsky or Sun Ra rather than P.T. Barnum" - Boston Phoenix.

Chris GeorgeWhen listening to this album of eight Vancouver musicians try picturing a band of suburbanites-turned-serial killers living in the desert howling circus-themed anthems into the black of the night. Although this album is full of poppy, danceable, sing along ditties, there is something so menacing underneath it all. You feel as if you're overhearing the tribal musings of bloodthirsty babes who have written songs to kill by. They Shoot Horses Don't They find a way to french-braid classic indie pop with D.C.-esque post punk and circus horns with "everybody sing along over this dead body" vocals. Like children ripping the wings off flies They Shoot Horses Don't They are ripping away from clichéd indie pop.
