The Logic of Building the Body Plan (CDep)
The Logic of Building the Body Plan is an intricately arranged 26 minutes of pop music founded on secretly complicated rhythmic structures. Male vocals and female harmonies build narratives off scenes summoned by the instruments and by a library of stolen sounds that emigrated to their songs: grandmas, crafty cabbies, trains, party laughter, turnstiles, storytellers, and a fieldsworth of crickets. It's approachable music; it sounds like they knocked themselves out, which they did, and it also sounds like a pleasure to dive headfirst into.

| This is a great EP, full of pleasant pop songs that seem just slightly off. The songs are not catchy, but they are memorable, the kinds of songs you try to sing to your friends because you want to share them, but when you open your mouth, you can't quite remember how they fit together. Each song on the disc is instantly gratifying, but repeated listens reveal more to love. This album is great in its own right, but even more exciting because it suggests that their soon-to-come full length will be fantastic. | |
