Built to Spill

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Built to Spill were one of the most popular indie rock acts of the '90s, finding the middle ground between postmodern, Pavement-style pop and the loose, spacious jamming of Neil Young. From the outset, the band was a vehicle for singer/songwriter/guitarist Doug Martsch, who revived the concept of the indie guitar hero just as Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis -- another important influence -- was beginning to fade from the limelight. On record, Martsch the arranger crafted intricate, artfully knotted tangles of guitar; in concert, his rough-edged soloing heroics ...[more]

Built to Spill return after five years with a self-produced album, featuring the studio debut of former Delusions guitarist Jim Roth, who has been playing live with the band for several years. Quasi's Sam Coomes also contributed on keyboard.

Perhaps realizing that their time on a major label was likely limited, Built to Spill made a gutsy choice for Keep It Like a Secret, their second album for Warner Brothers. VINYL FORMAT. Reissue features previously unreleased bonus track "Easy Way". Not many groups would take a major-label contract as a cue to release an album where the shortest song is a very radio-unfriendly five minutes in length. For that, listeners can thank their lucky stars that Built to Spill isn't like many groups -- and that frontman Doug Martsch isn't like many artists. Using Warner's bigger budgets and distribution, Martsch and company have made an album at once inspiring and quietly emotional.

VINYL FORMAT. One of the most critically acclaimed of modern rock bands, Built To Spill returns with its long-awaited album, the first in five years. Putting aside extensive overdubs and an atmosphere sweep, You in Reverse captures the organic, loose, impromptu feel of the band's jams. Led by influential alt-rock hero Doug Martsch and sprouting new influences and a fresh feel, Built To Spill drives ahead with You in Reverse.

Three and a half years in the making, the efforts of writing and recording There Is No Enemy led Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch to wonder whether this would be the last album he ever makes. For this release, song lyrics were labored over then thrown in the trash, guitar parts revised again (and again). A musician and artist like Doug Martsch edits   [ read more ]

With There's Nothing Wrong With Love, Idaho native and former Treepeople singer-guitarist Doug Martsch brings the lush pop-rock of the Beatles and Beach Boys kicking and screaming into the Sonic Youth-era. Built To Spill marries the timeless and the modern so naturally that even brilliant, like-minded contemporaries like Guided By Voices and the Flaming Lips seem calculated. None of these songs crosses the dreaded four-minute mark. Maximum heavy-pop pleasure is squeezed into concise verse-chorus-vers   [ read more ]
