2004, Lelp
Beneath the gleaming corporate star, America fattens and bloats, weighted by the amount of debt and gluttony, clogged hearts burning for sex and power, and under this neon glow her soul has died. Enter The Pine Hill Haints, the spirit of this once pioneer land, now dead and forgotten, a shadow. The band met in the wreckage of Alabama through skateboarding. In the wild, dirty south, the police still hammer down any form of life or spark of beauty, and in order to stay below the radar, the young group of skaters began practicing acoustically in a nearby graveyard. Ancient sounds from Africa and Ireland began to emerge, with a heavy rhythm and the power of blues, calling on the corpse of folk and country. To us here at Lelp, The Pine Hill Haints are bringing a new sound to Southern roots music, like a country-infused Black Hearts Procession. Their debut Lelp release, "Bury Your Hate in a Shallow Grave," was recorded by Calvin Johnson at Dub Narcotic. For fans of Jon Langford, The Sadies, Black Hearts Procession, and even Johnny Cash.
