Calla's third effort encompasses their signature experimental raw sound. Written and recorded while on tour abroad and in their hometowns, the band had a chance to focus on their collections of field recordings for this release. They've created their own identity, while at the same time have been compared to Nick Cave and Low.

User Reviews

Christopher Smith - Long Beach, CA, USA
Following on the heels of the 2005 release of "Collisions", Calla returns for their fifth full length effort. While the band may have strayed into the taboo land of catchy songwriting and guitar hooks for "Collisions", here they appear to be getting back to their roots. "Strength in Numbers" has taken a step back from the traditional indie-rock stylings of their last two efforts, and appears to be making a regression into a more dreamy, meandering soundscape approach to songwriting that they started out with. Unfortunately, after the sheer effectiveness that they displayed with writing songs that were catchy and fun, while still maintaining the trademark Calla sense of gloom on "Collisions", this feels like a step backwards for them. "Strength in Numbers" was written while they were on tour in support of "Colllisions", and perhaps because of this it feels like an unfinished record filled with unfinished ideas. Perhaps they should have thought this one out a bit more, or maybe the songs are intentionally dressed down. In either case, even if this is not their best release, a mediocre Calla album is still much better than most albums out there.
