2010, Polydor Records
Never before or since The La's has there been so much fascination and reverence for a band with so slender an output. Despite their one classic album, the La's were one of the most influential British bands of modern times. They wrote and recorded undeniable songs that are miniature masterpieces in emotion, economy and melodic weight.
Polydor is proud to present The La's Callin' All, a 4xCD box set that gathers together all of the band's remaining unreleased recordings, which are being officially released for the first time on one comprehensive set that captures the band's myriad attempts to capture the feeling that Lee Maver strove to harness in their sound.
'Disc One collects the band's singles, including 1987 debut "Way Out," an unreleased version of "Timeless Melody" from 1989 and the original 1988 version of the aforementioned "There She Goes," before it was re-recorded for the band's lone, self-titled, album. Disc Two features "the best of" the band's outtakes, versions of the La's limited songbook recorded with one famed producer after another, including John Porter (The Smiths), John Leckie (The Stone Roses), Mike Hedges (The Cure) and Steve Lillywhite (U2), among others (Lillywhite eventually pieced together The La's in 1990, although the alleged perfectionist Mavers famously bad-mouthed the final product). Finally, Discs Three and Four capture the La's live in concert, featuring previously unreleased performances recorded in London and Manchester in 1989 and 1991, plus five tracks recorded for Dutch radio that haven't been released before.' - SlicingUpEyeballs.com
