2005, Say Hey
H.P. Lovecraft would have loved this band -- as would Pink Floyd, Dead Meadow and The Doors. It's a little surprising, then, to learn that The Occasion don't hail from the misty, mysterious English countryside, or even from a creepy little hick town in middle America. Rather, they're from New York, a town that's supposed to produce bands full of skinny, cynical, VU-worshipping hipsters. Geographical trend-buckers The Occasion may be, but there's no question that their chosen band persona works: filled with enveloping atmospherics, strange and soothing psychedelia, and deeply felt appreciation for scale and grandeur, Cannery Hours will take you to places that are as familiar and welcoming as they are disquieting and exciting. ...Cannery Hours is full of music that's immediate and ancient, illuminating and surprisingly dark. Listen once and you'll be hooked forever. - Splendid Magazine

Customer Reviews

Andy InsoundOne of the few current bands to be able to incorporate the influences of Pink Floyd in a completely coherent way. Darkly psychedelic and overtly melancholy. Its a real shock that this group is not english. Standout tracks like Equine and So Far are great examples of a continuing psych scene that carries on the tradition bands of the 60's and 70's laid the groundwork for. Even the album artwork channels the feel of a lost era. The obligatory long jam track, The Maiden can be a bit forced but the rest of the album is really quite amazing.
