Charlie Barnet

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Charlie Barnet was unusual in several ways. One of the few jazzmen to be born a millionaire, Barnet was a bit of a playboy throughout his life, ending up with a countless number of ex-wives and anecdotes. He was one of the few white big band leaders of the swing era to openly embrace the music of Duke Ellington (he also greatly admired Count Basie). Barnet was a pioneer in leading integrated bands (as early as 1935). And, although chiefly a tenor saxophonist (where he developed an original sound out of the style of Coleman Hawkins), Barnet was an effect...[more]

Circle Records presents a series of Lang-Worth Transcriptions by Charlie Barnet and his Orchestra, most of which were recorded in New York's Liederkranz Hall on July 28, 1942; "Charleston Alley," using an arrangement by Horace Henderson, was committed to wax on January 27, 1941. Only six of the 14 tracks feature vocals; the singers are Lena Horne, Huck Andrews, Bob Carroll, Frances Wayne and Peanuts Holland. Instrumental treats include "Victory Walk," {&"Wichita Windst   [ read more ]

Charlie Barnet's band spurned conventional wisdom when they issued this set of rousing stompers and vintage standards in 1958. As the theory went, big bands had been dead for years and there was no interest among modern fans in these old numbers. That may or may not have been true then or now, but it was true enough that the band came out roaring on the title track and did not stop through 11 quick, often blistering numbers. The ensemble playing was furious but well disciplined, while solos were, out of    [ read more ]

ASV/Living Era's Cherokee is a good sampler of material from Charlie Barnet's prime, highlighted by the title track, "Leapin' at the Lincoln," "Comanche War Dance," "Swingin' on Nothin'," "Charleston Alley" and "You Always Hurt the One You Love," which features vocals by Kay Starr. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

This 20-track collection of tracks by Charlie Barnet & His Orchestra doesn't contain any of Barnet's best-known recordings like "Skyliner" or the 1939 hit cover of "Cherokee," so it isn't necessarily a good starting point for a historical overview of his career. There are, however, some great cuts here, including "Really?" and the opening track, "Darn That Dream," as well as credible arrangements of several Duke Ellington compositions, including "In a Jam" and "C Jam Blues." ~ Ste   [ read more ]

Featuring six studio tracks and a full 1947 live show, Town Hall Jazz Concert features the late-'40s version of saxophonist Charlie Barnet's big band. Included in the band at the time were such eventual legends as trumpeters Clark Terry and Doc Severinsen along with alto saxophonist Bud Shank. Although not as well known as such swing-era contemporaries as Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, Barnet's band was a superb swing outfit that also flirted heavily with such cutting-edge sty   [ read more ]

The Charlie Barnet Orchestra was busy on Jan. 27, 1941, waxing no less than 25 titles as radio transcriptions. There is one vocal apiece for Lena Horne ("It's a Haunted Town") and Bob Carroll, but otherwise it is a purely instrumental date. The popular Barnet band, which often looked toward Duke Ellington and Count Basie for inspiration, had few major soloists (trumpeter Bobby Burnet, pianist Bill Miller, guitarist Bus Etri and Barnet himself on tenor, soprano and alto) and    [ read more ]
