The Chromatics

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Seattle's Chromatics were originally a quartet featuring vocalist Adam Miller, drummer Hannah Blilie, guitarist Devin Welch, and bassist Michelle Nolan. That lineup debuted in 2002 with a Calvin Johnson-produced 7" on Gold Standard Laboratories -- a split with Die Monitr Batss -- and followed with the similarly GSL-issued Chrome Rats vs. Basement Rulz LP. The sound? Sloppy post-punk revisionism channeled through Pacific Northwest indie rock. Guitars squiggled aggressively; the bass slapped and popped over drums that dealt disco its death blo...[more]

The Chromatics (not to be confused with the Seattle group or the Southern country rock ensemble of the same name) have released two singles featuring their brand of new wave disco-punk on the Troubleman Unlimited imprint: Healer/Witness and the limited-edition "Nite" 12" are back but this time on troubleman's kid brother Italians Do It Better. "They played kid sister to Glass Candy on the hyped (and rad) Italians Do it Better label compilation, After Dark, but this record is a star turn." - Pr   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Seattle's CHROMATICS follow-up their recent split 7" EP with their debut full-length release. Recorded in Portland in early 2002, and produced by Jonny Jewel of Glass Candy & The Shattered Theatre, "Chrome Rats..." chronicles this explosive, sexually-charged punk band's maturation -- and subsequent implosion. Three-fourths of the band bailed out when this thing was "in the can," leaving vocalist/songwriter Adam to pick up the pieces. Thirteen hi-fi tracks of writhing, claustrophobic venom that   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. At the start of the year, Chromatics wowed us with ethereal new vocalist Ruth on "In The City." Now we have the longer, sexier and obviously therefore better 12" version where the sinister strings take us on a journey further down the concrete river to deserted, shadowy and rain soaked citadels. LP Shining Violence is so close now that we can taste its neon blue metallic shine. -20jazzfunkgreats.co.uk

This 12"/CD single teaser for the Chromatics' 2006 full-length features the Italo-Europop-influenced "Nite," complete with a cappella and instrumental versions. This track alone is well worth the price of admission, especially for fans of the Cybernetic Broadcasting System and any production from Dutch electro labels such as Viewlexxx and Clone. The second side features "The Guest," a mediocre attempt at a post-punk ballad, and "Glass Slipper," another stylish midtempo ro   [ read more ]
