Cinerama

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

David Gedge put the Wedding Present on a shelf after a 1997 gig. Since then, he's concentrated on the classic pop-oriented Cinerama, centered lyrically around his regular themes of courtship, romance, love, lust and infidelity. Since Gedge spent the better part of two decades in a band that painted his diverse tastes into a corner musically, it's no surprise that his new work would be just as heartfelt and prolific as that of his former band. A fittingly titled group, Cinerama has indulged Gedge's love of film music from John Barry to blaxploitation, as we...[more]

Indie pop as seductive device? Not a chance, unless you've heard Cinerama. Really -- think about it. Is there anything remotely erotic about Sebadoh, Sloan, or (gasp!) the Elephant Six contingent? No sir/ma'am. Disco Volante seems like a more logical extension of the Wedding Present than Va Va Voom, employing more electric than acoustic guitars and drier production. Only five-sevenths of This Is Cinerama will be new to owners of the U.S. edition of Va Va Voom, but that shouldn't deter them from purchasing it. Despite no longer being an angsty whippersnapper, David Gedge shows no signs of slowing down or tempering his biting mix of the bittersweet, the dark, and the seedy, as it relates to all the upswings and downfalls of love, lust, and infidelity. At this point, there's very little doubting that, at age 70, Gedge will be penning witty songs about the tempting nurse who rubs VapoRub across his chest with such titillating flair. His third studio album with partner Sally Murrell and friends as {$Cinerama   [ read more ]

Along with a new album every other year, David Gedge's Cinerama has released a steady of flow of singles featuring B-sides that often rate favorably with a bulk of the album material -- anyone who has followed Gedge's career is familiar with the value he places on the increasingly neglected format. Cinerama Holiday succeeds This Is Cinerama as the second compilation dedicated to keeping all the band's non-album material available, with everything from the band's fifth through eighth singles c   [ read more ]
