Citified (CD)
Rising from the shadows of Greensboro, NC-based pop/rock trio Lookwell, Citified is the new project consisting of Chris Jackson (Lookwell singer/guitarist), Andy Ross (Push Pull Men) and Franklin Kane (Franklin Kane's Fist). The band's debut self-titled CD is a blend of organic instrumentation, intricate arrangements and a hint of experimentation, all meshed into a collection that will awe listeners with its subtlety, suggesting a cinematic scope that is atypical of your standard indiepop debut release. Taking cues from bands such as the Postal Service, R.E.M. (circa Up) and Red House Painters, Jackson compiled the songs with the help of engineer Jerry Kee (Superchunk, Kingsbury Manx, Mendoza Line) in early '04, shortly after the release of Lookwell's critically aclaimed Unhurried. Relying primarily on electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards, drum machines, and odds & ends found at Kee's studio, Citified reveals additional layers with each listen. Like the best pop records, it's at once familiar and catchy, yet fresh and innovative.
