9.0 on Pitchfork! Clap Your Hands Say Yeah has stockpiled a mass of oft-trampled influences, including what amounts to a 12-course meal of in-vogue '80s acts. What's interesting is the manner in which the players assemble this source material. The Cure and The Smiths, for instance, are probed for neither nostalgic angst nor fashion cues. The Reagan-era creepiness that often surfaces when contemporary acts dabble in such sounds in curtailed by Clap Your Hands' apparent affinity for the Clean and other indie slouchers, to say nothing of the harmonica strapped in front of singer Alec Ounsworth's mouth. (Republicans play keyboards, but it takes a socialist to pull of the consecrated harmonica holder.) - Jay Ruttenberg Timeout NY

Best album of last year.

Definitely one of the most inspiring CDs of 2005, CYHSY brings a driving melodic barage that will make that back right corner of your brain hurt in the best of ways. For some reason I cannot stop listening to this album; the voice haunts my dreams and the head bouncing beats make me want to start my own band. Great re-listenability (is that a word) If you don't own this CD, figure out a way to buy it. It's too refreshing to bore you.

David Byrne must be rolling in his grave...what? He's not dead? Oh god, Zombie David Byrne! Yes, if you listen to this album you will hear the shadow of the Talking Heads (can you hear a shadow, apparently yes). After the opening carnival sillyness, the album gets going with a poppy, life-affirming momentum that basically doesn't stop (I don't have a thesaurus, so just go to Pitchfork for more synonyms). From the opening strums of "Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away", to the little pop masterpiece that is "Heavy Metal", to the none-too-subtle politicking of "Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood", these guys know how to make you smile. But you know what? Even though it's a stellar debut, the album also doesn't leave me with that breathless feeling, those goosebump inducing moments when you remember that, man, rock is just the best thing the human race has ever produced outside of HBO. Let's just wait to see what Clap Your Hands Say Yeah has in store for us next before we annoint them with the "indie savior" title, 'kay?

the indie rock smash of 2005, and rightfully so, these dudes DO IT UP. falls into the unique-voice-dance-rock genre and sits upright and righteous alongside wayne coyne, jeff mangum, brad marsch, ben bridwell. note to fans who want to see CYHSY live: buy your tickets at 10AM or ASAP, these boys will sell out every frickin venue for the next year. remember the days of waiting in line overnight for the ever-dominating, ruthless warlords at TICKETMASTER? those were the days. this is the band.

They've been compared to everybody from Talking Heads to The Smiths, The Cure, Arcade Fire, and oddly enough, to Neutral Milk Hotel. Funny thing is I see exactly why, though I can't really explain it at all. But the thing that this album makes me think of the most is Radiohead, and their first album, "Pablo Honey," and not just because the single, 'Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away' rips so blatantly from 'Stop Whispering.' This is the sound of a band on the brink of something grand. They recorded the album themselves and even pressed and sold the first 2,000 copies or so in one member's apartment. But there's something about this album even more endearing than that: the heart-on-the-sleeve, majestically jangling pop is stunning at times, yes, but more often than not, it feels... significant.

i heard this at one of my fav record stores and at first thought 'the singer sounds like david byrne but, more snarly.' the more i listened the more intrigued i was. thankfully, i bought it. and what do you know, two months later this band is huge! this album is so pleasing. it has the element of weird (track1) and fun to it. has the serious drone and then the fun 'i wanna bang drums on my steering wheel' song. it has those songs that make you wanna... clap your hands... and... say ...yeah. (heh-hmm.) this album will keep you entertained and intrigued long after you buy it. i highly recommend this for any music lovers collection. one of my top 10 of 2005.

A good album, no denying it. However, not the be-all-end-all of indie rock like so many would proclaim. Personal favorites include Let The Cool Goddess Rust Away and Heavy Metal. A strong album from beginning to end.
