Coalesce
Coalesce's music has consistently pushed the boundaries of the hardcore and metal genres, forging a mind-boggling obsession with strange, shifting tempos with power, noise, groove, and a creativity paralleled only by the band's peers in Dillinger Escape Plan and Botch. The origins of Coalesce can be traced back to a band called Breach -- a group not to be confused with the European outfit that shares their name. Breach formed in January of 1994 with Jes Steineger on guitar, Stacy Hilt on bass, and drummer James Redd. After a few abortive attempts at fin...[more]

While clocking in at only 20 minutes, and containing just seven tracks, Coalesce's Functioning on Impatience may very well be their best release. And having a crisp, brilliant layout for the album art doesn't hurt the cause, either. The first track starts out with vocalist Sean Ingram bellowing a cappella in his caustic, wounded tone. The drumbeats start off simply, and right before everything explodes, Ingram subtly proclaims, "You can't kill us all," thus opening the way for a song full of [ read more ]

?As Coalesce, the quartet began to define its own sound, bridging together odd time signatures, an abrasive vocal style, and wandering guitar dissonance. They wrote five songs together and performed for free in basements, eventually releasing a self-titled 7' single through Chapter Records that quickly blew through its initial 1,000-copy pressing. The buzz generated by the single and the band's increasingly volatile live performances drew the attention of metal powerhouse label Earache, which invited Coales [ read more ]

Although impressive, the five songs which comprise Coalesce's A Safe Place don't seem to measure up to the rest of their respective catalog. Granted, the rhythm section holds things down quite capably, but the guitars seem extra sludgy, even for a band known for their thick guitar tone. Sean Ingram's vocals compliment the guitar, sounding bloated and agonized, accenting the right chords and portions of the songs. The guitar is still frenzied and the snare hits all the right points of attack with it [ read more ]

Coalesce's sound is difficult to describe; it's not quite hardcore punk, not quite alternative metal, not quite grindcore or death metal -- just extreme and furiously chaotic. But, at the same time, 012: Revolution in Just Listening is quite musical, its progressive song structures and odd time signatures revealing themselves more and more with each listen. The band negotiates its tricky compositions with chops to burn, delivering ferociously cathartic performances underscored by the assaultive yet te [ read more ]
