Coaxial

Long Beach, CA's Coaxial follow-up their debut EP (2005's The Phantom Syndrome) with their first full-length album. The self-titled collection of 13 tracks was recorded by the band at their Lime Light home studio and mastered by Jeff Harris (Free Moral Agents). Comprised of vocalist Beegs Alchemy and beat/scratch maestro David K., Coaxial are often described by writers and fans alike through comparisons made to one of them or the other: vocally they're reminiscent of El-P and Eminem, but the way Beegs shifts gears from rhymes into spoken-word suggests a familiarity with the likes of Saul Williams and, obviously, Free Moral Agents; David's haunting beats and rhythms stutter and click DJ Shadow-style, while his unusual choices for keyboard sounds and samples bathe the recordings in an ominous, eery atmosphere one might even consider calling "darkwave" (shhh!). Equally concerned with stream-of-consciousness, psychedelic imagery and personal introspection, Coaxial tread unfamiliar territory and their willingness to bend genres keep things unpredictable.
