2010, Local 638 Records
Loved and cult-followed for his rock/pop bands Pure Joy and Flop, Seattle songwriter Rusty Willoughby turns out a new album of stunning, lo-electricity recordings called Cobirds Unite. Rusty has logged records for Sub Pop, Sony, and Frontier since 1982, and is influenced by everything from Gram Parsons to Steve Martin. Cobirds Unite is an hour of lush, intelligent, alt-country loneliness with vibraphone, cello, and pedal steel in all the right places. Visqueen/Neko Case vocalist Rachel Flotard harmonizes on almost every line of every verse, and joins a brilliant cast of musicians including Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees/Tuatara), Barb Hunter (Afghan Wigs, Gutter Twins), and Johnny Sangster (Steve Turner/Mudhoney, The Tripwires).
