Codex Teenage Premonition features fifteen exclusive tracks that capture perfectly the raw teenage energy of one the most influential and unique British bands of the last twenty five years. The album features tracks recorded at their very first show at Leith Community Centre on 16th March 1980 together with un released studio versions of tracks that would later appear on their debut single and mini album. The Fire Engines, in keeping with the punk spirit, lasted a mere eighteen months but in that short time produced a handful of records that sounded, even now, like nothing else around.

In the almighty triad of Scottish post-punk there were three: Orange Juice, Josef K and Fire Engines. The father Josef gave us his steady rhythm and wise precision, the mother Orange her strive for pop perfection and lyrical grace, and then there was the delinquent child Fire Engine who smeared his feces into the floorboards, and continuously yelled obscenities at the whimpering dog. The child got his start in 1980 and was only with us for a mere 18 months, but in the world of pop that is enough to build mighty empires. Drawing from the likes of the Voidoids and James Chance, Fire Engines left us with abrasive-pop masterpieces with chaotic jagged/jangled guitars, frantic drumming and bratty vocals. Codex Teenage Premonition features selection of live tracks, rough studio demos, and a few Peel Sessions just for good measure. Other than the Peel Sessions, and a Franz Ferdinand cover of “Jacqueline” from 2004, the sound quality here is pretty rough. Although this is a sad reality, the songs found on this collection hold up on their own, and will likely not deter the listener. As an experiment, slip this between your kid cousin’s Erase Errata and Radio 4 albums, and watch his cheated little face. It’s fun!
