Collections of Colonies of Bees
Collections of Colonies of Bees was started as a side project for Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller, both of the post-rock group Pele. They mixed acoustic instruments with electronic sounds and released their self-titled debut on U.K.'s The Rosewood Union label. Collections of Colonies of Bees drew attention for their first LP and found a home in the U.S. label Crouton, which released Rance, fa.ce (a, and the Meyou EP. Pillowscars Records, a Swedish label, released their Stuck EP in 2003. Collections of Colonies of Bees decided to add two ...[more]

Collections of Colonies of Bees sweep in grandly, in billowing swarms of sound, bourn aloft on a thousand wings of minuscule, elegant detail. Guitars chime and soar; deft yet intensely focused percussion propels towards an inevitable dawn; covering it all is a gossamer veil of subtly nuanced electronica. Their CD Birds is joyous, epic minimalism in exquisite registration, a sound that is dazzling and as sweet as honey taken straight from the comb.

VINYL FORMAT. Table of the Elements celebrates its 15th anniversary with the debut disk in its Guitar Series Vols. 3 & 4. It's a 12-volume romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental music's most prominent players, including Christian Fennesz, Thurston Moore, and Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley. Collections of Colonies of Bees generated quite the (forgive us) buzz, following the January release of their CD Birds, and deservedly so. Their sound is expansive, vast, and billowing; full of ringing gui [ read more ]

From the ashes of Pele comes this band, who experiment in traditional instrumentation with modern technology, creating a melting pot of style so refreshing that classification becomes meaningless. Customer is stylistically broader with a deeper sense of cohesiveness than previous Bees' releases. άber-limited archival release of their 1998 album, recorded by the core duo of Pele's Chris Roseneau and Jon Mueller. A haunting work, centered on only lap steel and vocals and recorded live in a room in an abandoned warehouse, it is their most intimate and melancholic moment. Every nuance is captured, and every movement becomes part of the structure. These elements combine with long, textural bowing of the lap steel and mournful wailing vocals to reach glorious heights, unmatched by the pair since. Limited [ read more ]

One track, that's all they need. OK, so the track clocks in at 33 minutes, but still. Hot on the heels of 2002's "fa.ce (a" and 2003's "Meyou," this record shows a group that's constantly evolving. This time around, founding members Chris Rosenau (guitars) and Jon Mueller (drums and percussion) added laptop-fondler Jon Minor to enrich the sound. "Stuck" ranges from sparse sounds to full-on damnation, proving that these kings of Milwaukee can do no wrong. Between the recording and the release of this record, [ read more ]
