2002, Couchblip! (Australia)
AUSTRALIAN IMPORT. Spooky moods dominate this album, presenting a haunting sparseness, an ethereal interweaving of subtle melody and insistent rhythm. Some tracks are almost dirgelike in their tempo and tone, while others are catchy percussive pieces with driving basslines and sweet melodies drizzled over the top.
This is music that takes the concept of negative space seriously. There's a sense of evolution, of biological growth, in the way the tracks build, with each musical element layered one-by-one on top of each other, and a sense of playfulness and curiosity in the way that those layers are then added or subtracted as the music continues. The music strips back to only drums for the count of four, then various boops and beeps, blips and whistles, taps and clicks are slowly added until a trademark Disjunction Reunion melody, simple and catchy, is draped over the top until you're listening to a veritable honeycomb of music, undeniably sweet and precisely constructed.
