Criteria's Stephen Pedersen started out in Cursive, way back when Saddle Creek Records was still Omaha's little local secret. He eventually departed that group, moving to Durham, NC, to study law at Duke. But he couldn't stop rocking, and formed White Octave while in school. In 2001 Pedersen returned to Omaha, and wrote a batch of songs. They became the En Garde album, which he recruited local pals to help him perform live. By 2005's When We Break, issued through Saddle Creek, Criteria's full-time lineup included Pedersen, A.J. Mogis, {$Mike Sw...[more]

Stephen Pedersen, founding member of CURSIVE (Saddle Creek Records) and THE WHITE OCTAVE (Initial Records), returned to his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska after THE WHITE OCTAVE's untimely demise and began work on his newest musical project, CRITERIA. Stephen spent his time delicately crafting and composing a new batch of incredible rock tunes. He then enlisted his former bandmates and Saddle Creek brethren from CURSIVE, BRIGHT EYES and DESAPARECIDOS to lend their talents to the recordings. Thus, CRITERIA was    [ read more ]

By day, Criteria's Stephen Pedersen is entrenched in the beige, climate-controlled world of corporate law. By night, he tirelessly melds face-searing riffs with pounding, syncopated drums, awaiting a rock 'n' roll miracle. He needn't wait for that miracle any longer. And neither must you. This is the band's second full-length; a startling display of fist-pumping anthems and contagious melodies bent on shaking the ass of the most coolly aloof listener. Two words: big rock.

REISSUE. By now you've come across Criteria's freshly released album When We Break and concluded that the rhetoric about "face-searing riffs" and "a rock 'n' roll" miracle" isn't really rhetoric at all. But wait, there's more. Criteria's 2003 Initial Records debut, En Garde was the album for which the cliche "criminally overlooked" was created. It's ass-shaking, rock 'n' roll genius. Check it out.

After Stephen Pedersen shut down White Octave he moved back to Omaha. A former member of Cursive, Pedersen was already down with the Saddle Creek contingent. But being back in his hometown, he got sick of his daytime lawyering gig and was itching to rock again, to be angry into a mic again. After an initial batch of songs, he tapped locals A.J. Mogis (Bright Eyes, Lullaby for the Working Class) and Mike Sweeney (Beep Beep) as a rhythm section, added guitarist Aaron Druery, a   [ read more ]
