Cursive
As early as 1995, the original members of Cursive -- Tim Kasher on guitar and vocals, Clint Schnase on drums, Matt Maginn on bass, and Stephen Pederson on guitar -- began work on their newly christened project. The Omaha, NE-based four-piece came out of existing friendships and some of the members' previous work together in Slowdown Virginia, making the musical partnership a logical idea from the start. They debuted with Disruption 7" on the local friend-run label Saddle Creek and shortly released a second 7", Sucker and Dry, on New York-based {@Zero Ho...[more]

This is a stunning and cohesive concept album, by turns wildly dissonant and beautifully restrained, with organ and cello lines, thundering rhythms, and disjointed guitars. The Big Takeover said, "a challenging, explosive, exciting band, this is undoubtedly what post-hardcore was supposed to be about." Features members of Bright Eyes, The Good Life, and Mayday.

If we were to describe what Cursive's album sounds like, we would be in conflict with the thematic essence of the album itself. However, since this description is intended to tell you whether or not you are interested in Cursive musically, we will mention a few bands and/or songs which have positive characteristics we find in Cursive: Fugazi (in their ability to mix hardcore and pop while paying extraordinary attention to song structure and dynamics); Bettie Serveert / The Pretenders (in their arrangement [ read more ]

After more than a year's hiatus, Cursive's reemergence finds the freshly reconstituted quartet as self-assured and assertive as ever. And rather than retread familiar artistic ground for which they've accrued accolades by the vanload, Cursive has unfurled their most adventurous and accomplished work to date, Happy Hollow. Happy Hollow is an expansion of Cursive's trademark discordant swell: dissonant yet distinctively melodic guitar sounds and frontman Kasher's ever-cathartic yowl mesh and cla [ read more ]

After the critically acclaimed release of last year's Cursive's "Domestica," Omaha's Cursive are back on the forefront of the post hardcore/indie rock music scene. Their combination of melody and technical madness continues on the latest release, "Burst and Bloom," a new five-song EP that not only reflects that familiar intensity but also introduces us to a new aspect of the band (and coincidentally, a new member as well). Gretta Cohn is a welcome addition; adding her cello expertise to the songs of "Burst [ read more ]

Cursive's Domestica is the politics of love and hate. It's the vicious assault, the tender embrace, and the bitter waiting game that falls in between. Cursive has written the soundtrack to the most troubling, intimate moments of our lives. This is their third feature full length, and quite obviously their most triumphant.

Following the 2006 release of Happy Hollow, Cursive launched a remix site that allowed users to register and download separated tracks for the song 'Bad Sects' (the second single from Happy Hollow). Remixers submitted their rearranged versions for a Bad Sects Remix Contest. The band posted some of their favorite submissions on the site and chose the winning remix to be used as a b-side on a future single. Ten years since their formation, Cursive offer this collection which includes two previously unreleased songs and ten sought after tracks from their out-of-print 7-inches. Also included is a 24-page booklet featuring the story that is the album's namesake, written by front man Tim Kasher and illustrated by Eastern Youth artist Yuriko Yoshino. Each song is replete with thoughtful composition, offset by Kasher's now signature howl. Building from soft, nuanced intros to anthemic finishes that sear, many songs [ read more ]
