Born in Buffalo, NY, singer/songwriter David Stith spent his formative years surrounded by music. The son of a college wind ensemble/church director and pianist mother with a pair of opera singing sisters, Stith began his own music career after a long affair with writing, illustration, and graphic design. After meeting and working with Shara Worden of eclectic dream pop outfit My Brightest Diamond upon relocating to New York City, he began writing and recording his own songs, resulting in his independently released debut, Ichabod and Apple. VINYL FORMAT. Heavy Ghost communicates a startling range - from earnest yearning to heartbreak, shimmering hopefulness to the brink of existential despair. DM Stith's ethereal voice communicates the unfathomable - mysticism, the commingling of water and fire, waking dreams, spiritual torment - with reckless abandon rarely seen in many albums, let alone a debut work.

Heavy Ghost, the debut album from DM Stith, had an almost supernatural effect when it was released in March of 2009. Reviewers and fans alike acclaimed it as a stunning debut unlike anything else they'd heard in a while. Stith's peers received it just as well: Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear twittered about it calling it a ?lovely album,? and Bat for Lashes picked it for her New York Times playlist, saying ?It traverses all these magical landscapes? almost like Alice through the looking glass. The music on DM Stith's debut EP calls to mind Antony And The Johnsons, Grizzly Bear, and sometimes the explosiveness of Animal Collective, along with the dissonance of Sonic Youth and Henryk Gorecki, the expressive vocal techniques of Caetano Veloso and Mary Margaret O'Hara, and the romance and textures of Benjamin Britten and Edward Elgar. Most everything about DM Stith's remarkable debut suggests that it's something of an anomaly. Heavy Ghost adheres to few preconceived notions belonging to any one movement or style, but sounds like it could have been influenced by any number of factors just barely out of the range of recognition. The sheer magnetism of this music lies in its subtly skewed intricacies: acoustic guitars strummed in atypical ways, chords carried through slight transmutations in almost hidden rhythmic patterns, and ghostl   [ read more ]
