Electronic music composer Dan Deacon is based in Baltimore, MD, and is equally influenced by such diverse elements as Devo, Talking Heads, Scratch Orchestra, Raymond Scott, and Conlon Nancarrow. Standing in a Greyhound Bus station, wearing a Sylvester t-shirt and huge duct-tape-covered glasses, Baltimore's Dan Deacon doesn't invoke the image of a composer to the other bus riders. The two suitcases he loads under the bus, which accompany him from city to city, hold the sweat-and-grime-soaked electronics that he uses to craft his raging, maxed-out party music and light show. After 12 tours and 300+ shows in little over 2 years, the gear is beaten and battered, but the show and the energy it produces [ read more ]

These monsters are collections of my early H.I.T.S, containing compositions for electronics, collage, monologue, vocal group, computer music, and large chamber ensemble. They are weird beasts, very different from my live show, but still killerest yessers in my opinion.

As many concertgoers would attest, electronic music is not particularly visually engaging, at least as live music experiences go. Dan Deacon seeks to upend the high-minded seriousness of the avant-garde and inject a fair amount of goofiness and absurdist fun into his 21st-century version of the one-man band. Armed with dime-store toy keyboards, vocoders, and other circuit-riddled oddities, Deacon coaxes strange blips and squeals while happily singing along in a slightly demented fashion.
