For his senior thesis project at Rutgers University, Daniel Smith handed in what became Danielson Famile's album A Prayer for Every Hour; he got an A. The album was released on Tooth & Nail Records in 1995. It features Smith backed by his siblings, who range in age from 12 to their early twenties. Tell Another Joke at the Ol' Choppin' Block, produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Low, Palace Brothers), followed in 1997. The sixth and most accessible album to date, featuring a star-studded cast of players including Deerhoof, Sufjan Stevens, Serena Maneesh, and more. What began as a senior thesis project a decade ago has evolved into a musical world so rich with musicality and merrymaking that the first six albums and ten years of touring pomp alone could nourish the most scrutinizing of thrill-seekers. There's no hard distinction between the visuals (costumes and graphics) and the music from this suburban New Jersey group. [ read more ]

SOUND SAVER. FETCH is a collaboration between the Famile and uber-engineer Steve Albini, who slept on an air mattress in southern New Jersey for several nights just to complete the task. This unlikely meeting of the minds has produced a whirling dervish of an album, one that is both crisp and deep, with multi-colors and multi-Gospel-rhythms from the Smith family and friends on a gypsy-like parade. The audio-visual genius of eldest son Daniel, who sings in a falsetto that is both endearing and jarring, bring [ read more ]

First in a series of three reissues of Danielson Famile albums by Secretly Canadian. As perfect a debut as the four-tracked 24-song opus was, it was with their second record, "Tell Another Joke at the Ol' Choppin' Block" that Danielson Famile really established themselves as premier album-makers. Recorded partly in a funeral parlor in South Jersey by Shimmy Disc guru Kramer, the album stands as a potent and surreal testament to eldest brother and chief songwriter Daniel's revisionist take on the daily moral [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Danielson Famile initially was a family group where oldest brother Daniel provided the songs' complexity - structured pieces of music born from divine inspiration and solidified by the group's spontaneous interpretations. They made a truly joyful noise unto the Lord. Now the Danielson Famile has grown three distinct branches -- sounds that run parallel in spirit: the acoustic, hand-clapping gospel of the Danielson Famile, the dark stadium/scouting/marching/town band from Danielship, and the "n [ read more ]
