Deastro
Randolph Chabot, an indie electronica producer from Sterling Heights, MI, releases music under a variety of monikers, the most acclaimed of which is Deastro. Chabot began making music as an adolescent, and after moving away from the Detroit area for a few years to attend college, he moved back home into the basement of his parents' house, where he based his studio. His first release to garner significant acclaim was Young Planets/Time the Teenage Twister (2007), a double album co-billed to Deastro and another of his monikers, Our Brother the Megazord. VINYL FORMAT. "Vermillion Plaza," the second single from Deastro's full-length debut, Moondagger, miniaturizes the album s best assets and shoots them out of a cannon. Plucky synth arpeggios, end-of-the-world choruses, joyously careening melody lines-it s all there, squashed into a life-affirming three minutes and 50 seconds. The B-side is Mux Mool's lumbering, half-time remix of "Vermillion Plaza." The former Ghostly Swim featured artist plunges Chabot's vocal into a sinister electronic nightmare-sc [ read more ]

And while Moondagger, Deastro's astonishing new album, does contain traces of that dream - in all of its bittersweet, fantasy-novel glory - the record itself is infinitely more down-to-earth, containing the sort of unrelentingly earnest, inspiratio [ read more ]

The third single from Deastro's Moondagger harnesses Randolph Chabot's positive outlook, hiding a humble plea for a better world inside a bright synth-rock anthem with macabre undertones. Toxic Crusaders envisions a world in which cyclops babies are born from broken families, the symbol of their sins etched in genetic mutation; Chabot plays the hopeful soothsayer, positioning himself as ?a prophet of how things should be.? But while ?Toxic Crusaders? features some of Deastro's headier lyrical feats, [ read more ]

Judging a record by its cover is always a risky proposition, but in the case of Deastro's Keepers, an exception can be made. Keepers' laser-eyed celestial feline ? a creation of Bay Area-based artist Jesse Balmer ? is a mish-mash of sci-fi, fantasy, and comic-book tropes informed by an unerringly earnest enthusiasm: a perfect analog to Randolph Chabot's joyful, intergalactic electro-pop. Culled from the best of Chabot's home-recorded output over the last decade, Keepers is a loose [ read more ]

Deastro's Keeper's album was an informal best-of compilation, a mixtape of home-recorded gems from Randolph Chabot's dizzily creative mind.
