Death Cab for Cutie
Bellingham, WA, indie pop quartet Death Cab for Cutie began in 1997 as the solo project of singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard, who previously recorded under the name All-Time Quarterback. The underground success of the cassette You Can Play These Songs' Chords inspired Gibbard to recruit a full-time band including guitarist/organist Christopher Walla (who recorded the early DCFC sessions as well), bassist Nick Harmer, and drummer Nathan Good, and in the summer of 1998, Death Cab for Cutie issued their debut LP, Something About Airplanes, to much accl...[more]

Their fourth studio album blends subtle songwriting, amazing production, boundless creativity, and thoughtful rock. Highly recommended. "No two songs on 'Transatlanticism' are alike. 'Tiny Vessels' is a gorgeous ballad with a John Lennon-like modulation, 'Expo '86' a catchy if peculiar singsong, and 'The New Year' a glorious piece of rock embossed with sheets of guitars and driven by Mr. McGerr's drumming and a deft bridge. With his words, Mr. Gibbard transports his songs into environments that seem common [ read more ]

DC4C's second full length is everything you want from indie-rock: great songs, great lyrics, and ragged-but-right performances. Texturally there's nothing here you've not heard before: various combinations of guitar, drums, and bass. Cabmaster Ben Gibbard's early cassette releases reveal a slightly smug wiseass who thinks he's just okay. But for the recording of this disc, Gibbard's voice is full of confidence. His songwriting/lyrics show a new depth and grow more infectious with repeated listenings. "Compa [ read more ]

Formed in the sleepy town of Bellingham, Wash., back in 1998, Death Cab for Cutie quickly gathered up a strong local following, signing to the local indies, Elsinor and Barsuk, and releasing a debut album, "Something About Airplanes," within the band's first year. Three years later, one might assume the hype would have died down. But we've all been warned about what happens when we ass-u-me. The group's sophomore full-length, "We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes," rocketed Death Cab into the national li [ read more ]

"Something About Airplanes" is a great debut. Death Cab has a unique melodic gift for guitar based pop, like a less indulgent Built To Spill or a kinder, gentler Superchunk. In a twist on the indie rock blueprint, the Cabbies care enough about their thoughtful and poetic lyrics to actually print them out. They also enliven the standard two guitars, bass, and drums format with touches of toy piano, cello, and keyboards.

In 1997, before Death Cab for Cutie was a band, Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla made an eight-song cassette. Originally released by Bellingham's Elsinor Records, "You Can Play These Songs With Chords" is a remarkable document of what was to become DCFC. The Barsuk release compiles the original eight songs (five of which were later re-recorded for "Something About Airplanes"), plus 10 tracks of unreleased early recordings, covers, and outtakes from 1997-2000 (taken from recording sessions for "Chords," "Somethin [ read more ]

This five-song CD-EP features alternate versions of two songs from their brilliant sophomore effort, "we have the facts and we're voting yes," plus three brand new songs. Working in the standard guitar/bass/drums format, with occasional keyboards, there's nothing surprising about their sound. However, it's Ben Gibbard's unique sense of melody and strong emotional vibe that makes hunting down every note by this band a satisfying endeavor. [ read more ]
